The Askep Biotechnology position supports the leadership and management of the sugarcane genetic transformation program. The role oversees laboratory operations, transformation workflows, tissue culture activities, molecular analysis, and research personnel to develop genetically improved sugarcane varieties with enhanced agronomic and industrial traits. The position also ensures compliance with biosafety regulations and contributes to scientific innovation and technology transfer.
Job Descriptions:
Lead and coordinate sugarcane genetic transformation projects using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation.
Optimize tissue culture, regeneration, transformation, and selection protocols.
Design and implement experiments for gene function validation and trait improvement.
Evaluate transgenic and genome-edited plants through molecular and phenotypic analyses.
Collaborate with breeding, molecular biology, genomics, and field evaluation teams.
Supervise laboratory operations, equipment maintenance, and workflow efficiency.
Ensure laboratory safety, biosafety, and compliance with institutional and national regulations.
Develop and maintain SOPs for transformation and molecular biology procedures.
Manage laboratory budgets, inventory, and procurement.
Supervise research scientists and laboratory technicians.
Train and mentor junior staff in plant transformation and molecular biology techniques.
Allocate resources and monitor project progress and deliverables.
Ensure compliance with GMO biosafety regulations and quality standards.
Maintain accurate experimental records and laboratory documentation.
Participate in internal and external audits when required.
Job Requirements:
Master degree in Plant Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Plant Science, or related field, Phd is preferrable.
Minimum 5-7 years of experience in plant biotechnology, including at least 3 years in leadership or supervisory roles.
Proven experience in sugarcane transformation or transformation of other monocot crops is highly desirable.
Able to communicate in English, written and verbal is beneficial.
Technical Skills:
Sugarcane tissue culture and plant regeneration.
Agrobacterium-mediated transformation.
Molecular biology techniques (PCR, qPCR, Southern blot, sequencing).
Gene cloning.
Plant phenotype evaluation.
Experimental design and statistical analysis.
